Tarique Rahman: Returning from Exile to Lead Bangladesh

Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh on February 17, 2026, marking a historic political realignment for the South Asian nation. His ascent ends nearly two decades of rule by the Awami League and makes him the country’s first male premier since 1991.

Born in Dhaka in 1967, Rahman is the heir to a political dynasty. He is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and martyred President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He was just 15 years old when his father was assassinated in 1981, an event that thrust his family into the heart of the nation’s turbulent politics.

His political career has been a study in contrasts: both a controversial power broker and a symbol of resilience. During his mother’s premiership from 2001 to 2006, he was often referred to by critics as the "Dark Prince" for his role as a de facto power center. However, his political trajectory was violently interrupted in 2007 when he was arrested on corruption charges by a military-backed caretaker government. After spending 18 months in detention—a period his party alleges involved torture—he was released and left for London in 2008, beginning a 17-year exile.

From his base in the UK, Rahman acted as the BNP’s "remote control," guiding the party through the harshest political repression under the Hasina government. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia over a 2004 grenade attack, a conviction his supporters decried as politically motivated. The political landscape shifted dramatically following the mass uprising in August 2024 that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Subsequent courts acquitted Rahman of all charges, paving the way for his triumphant return to Dhaka in December 2025, just days before the death of his mother, Khaleda Zia.

Leading the BNP to a landslide victory securing over two-thirds of parliamentary seats, Rahman now inherits a fragile economy and a nation seeking stability. In his inaugural address, he called for national unity, vowing to implement a "Bangladesh Before All" foreign policy to balance ties with India, China, and the West. As he shifts from exiled party chief to national leader, his ability to reconcile a deeply polarized nation will define his legacy.
