Maulana Mahmood Madani: Leader and President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind

Maulana Mahmood Madani is a prominent Islamic scholar, public intellectual, and one of the most influential Muslim leaders in contemporary India. As the President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH), one of the country’s oldest and most respected Islamic organizations, he has emerged as a strong voice for constitutional values, minority rights, and interfaith harmony in a diverse and often polarized social landscape.

Born in 1964, Maulana Mahmood Madani belongs to a distinguished family of Islamic scholars and national leaders. He is the son of the late Maulana Asad Madani, a towering figure of Indian Islam who served for decades as the President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha. Growing up in an environment deeply rooted in religious scholarship and public service, Mahmood Madani inherited both the intellectual legacy of the Deobandi tradition and a strong commitment to India’s pluralistic ethos.

Maulana Madani received his religious education at Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the most influential Islamic seminaries in the Muslim world. He specialized in Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, acquiring a solid grounding in classical Islamic sciences. Alongside his traditional education, he developed a keen understanding of contemporary political, social, and legal issues affecting Indian Muslims, which later shaped his public engagement and leadership style.

In 2006, Maulana Mahmood Madani was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, where he served until 2012. During his tenure, he raised issues related to minority rights, social justice, communal harmony, and internal security, often emphasizing the need to combat terrorism without stigmatizing any particular community. His parliamentary role enhanced his national profile and positioned him as a bridge between religious leadership and democratic institutions.

As President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Madani has steered the organization toward active legal, social, and humanitarian engagement. Under his leadership, JUH has been at the forefront of providing legal aid to victims of communal violence, wrongful arrests, and cases involving alleged terrorism. He has consistently maintained that Islam and Indian nationalism are not contradictory, reiterating Jamiat’s historic position that Muslims are equal stakeholders in India’s freedom, democracy, and constitutional order.

Maulana Madani is also known for his outspoken stance against communalism, majoritarianism, and hate politics. He frequently calls for unity among Indians of all faiths and advocates peaceful democratic resistance to injustice. At the same time, he urges the Muslim community to remain committed to education, social reform, and constructive engagement with broader society.

Despite facing criticism and political pressure, Maulana Mahmood Madani continues to articulate a vision of Islam that emphasizes justice, coexistence, and moral responsibility. Through his leadership of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, public interventions, and grassroots outreach, he remains a significant figure in shaping Muslim public discourse in India.

Maulana Mahmood Madani’s legacy lies in his effort to uphold the twin ideals of religious integrity and constitutional citizenship, reaffirming the role of Muslims as active participants in India’s democratic and pluralistic future.
